Announcing an All New Website

WHAT’S NEW ON THE SITE

023
My morning commute.
This year I had a wonderful spring! As we move into summer, I celebrate the launch of a new website for Simply Organized Life™. This was one my big goals for 2015.
There will always be a few more small updates to be made, but it’s a lot more organized and convenient for readers. Here’s a brief overview of the highlights:
You will find the Productive Lifestyle Scorecard™ on the Start Here page. When you fill out the Scorecard on-line, I contact you personally to schedule your complementary 30 minute Discovery Session™ via telephone, Skype or Facetime.
You can also find the latest upcoming seminars and service packages listed. And now that I am back to blogging fairly regularly, you can look for specific organizing tips right here in all of my blog posts. Don’t worry, there’s a search box to narrow your results.
I hope you find the new website useful. Working toward and reaching annual goals, like a website overhaul, is so much easier with an Organized Mindset™. What does that mean?
For over 10 year now, I have been giving seminars, working with clients and sharing my organizing wisdom with readers. I feel called to this work and the longer I do it, the more I realize that getting and staying organized is about our mindsets.
In the next post over at Simply Organized Life, I will share 5 tips that can help us develop an Organized Mindset™. I would love to hear what you think!
Please note that all future posts will be at Simply Organized Life.

Travel Tips

Carolyn in Torun, Poland, circa 2005
Today's post is an oldie, but goody, originally posted on this blog in May 2006.

Having left a corporate career in sales and lived overseas, I have traveled a lot. My last trip as a corporate road warrior had me off to Japan with all of four days notice. When I showed up at the airport my male counterparts were surprised that my only luggage was an 18 inch Travelpro carry-on and a purse large enough to hold my computer.

With a little bit of organization, you too can be jetting off to far flung places at a moment's notice. Here are my tips for packing light and enjoying the ride:

1) Pick your bags---Try to limit yourself to one small sturdy bag per person. This can even save you money with the airlines’ nickeling and diming for baggage charges these days.

2) Pack your bags---If you travel frequently, keep small sample sized toiletries in your travel bag at all times. This saves packing time and avoids forgotten items.

3) Start with your itinerary---For business or pleasure, you should have an idea of your daily travel plans. This will help you pick out the necessary clothes and shoes.

4) Get back to the basics---When traveling, stick to easy care mix and match separates or suits in the same color palette. I always try to limit myself to two pairs of shoes of the same color: one casual and one dressy.

5) Use every nook and cranny---Rolling knit items can save space. You can also pack socks and undergarments inside of your extra pair of shoes that are covered with plastic bags. Neatly folding dirty clothes inside of plastic bags saves space on the way home.

6) Relax---Don’t worry if you forget something. Unless you are traveling to a very remote part of the world, you can almost always buy what you need or wash clothes at your destination.

Avoid Organizing Mistakes (Part 1 of 3)

Summer is a busy time.

With all the activities on the calendar and less structure, I find it more difficult to stay organized in the summer months. Does this hold true for you?

That being said, I believe even a little organization can take us a long way in the busy month of July.

Today I am sharing the first of three ways you can avoid the most common organizing mistakes.

Follow these tips and you can take in all those activities guilt free, without worrying about disorganization.

Do a Little at a Time

Many of us think that if we just had one weekend (or if you're a Mom, maybe one hour) we could really get things organized. The problem with this thinking is that for most of us these large chunks of time are few and far between.

While spending a weekend on organizing can lead to amazing results, if you do not have a plan to keep the area organized, it won't be long until you are in the same predicament again. Taking baby steps when it comes to organizing is the long term way to keep clutter at bay.

Kitchen Organizing Tips

Enjoy Summer's Bounty with a Tidy Kitchen

Summer is officially here! My favorite thing about summer in Michigan is our abundance of fresh local produce. With an organized kitchen you can enjoy the foods of summer even more.

Here are some quick and easy ways to keep your kitchen organized and clean:

1) Clean Up After Every Meal
Organization breeds organization. You (and hopefully, your family) will be more likely to keep a tidy kitchen when you clean up after every meal. Wash or put dirty dishes in the dishwasher and wipe down counter tops.

2) Know What You Have
Before heading out to the grocery store or local farmers' market, check your refrigerator and pantry. Base your meal plan and shopping list on what you already have on hand. This will save you money and eliminate food waste.

3) Wipe Down Your Refrigerator
A 2010 Wall Street Journal article reported that most Americans clean their refrigerators only once or twice a year. Why wait until it gets gross? If you shop weekly your refrigerator should be nearly empty the day before. This is a perfect time to wipe down your refrigerator. An old rag with vinegar and water works great.

4) Put Paper in its Place
It is a fact of life. Paper is going to end up in the kitchen. Find a designated place for papers to land in your home away from food preparation. I have a desk in my kitchen where papers land temporarily. In addition, I utilize a 3M Command spring clip on the wall for papers related to upcoming events or deadlines.

Summertime!

Now that we are fully into July, summertime has officially arrived here in Michigan. My garden is in full bloom and looks so beautiful. The tree peony (photo below) blooms are long gone and have been replaced by lilies and lavender. This summer what are you doing to enjoy life more? Are you slowing down to "smell the roses" or "take in the warm sun"? Or are you finishing up some nagging projects? Remember this time is fleeting, just like the beautiful peony bloom. Take advantage of every day!

Summertime

The Summer Solstice officially arrives next month on June 21st, but with all the hot weather we have been having lately here in Michigan it makes me feel that summer has already arrived. Memorial Day passed us by on Monday and the kids will be getting out of school soon.

Summertime is a great time of the year to get organized and get your children involved in the process. By involving the whole family, you can teach your kids the life skill of organizing. If you do not know where to start, a professional organizer or organizing consultant can help. I often work with entire families to help them get organized.

Here are a few areas that are great summertime organizing projects:
  • Kids Artwork: Sit down with your children individually to pick out favorite works of art from the previous school year. The "keepers" can be stored in a decorative box.
  • The Basement: On the hottest days, it's great to work in a cool basement. I recommend working on your own in blocks of 1 hour or less. You can work longer if you have the guidance of a professional organizer or organizing consultant.
  • The Garage: Summer is the best time to organize the garage because it is warm and it is the time you are using tools stored here. This will make it easy to get rid of all those things that collecting dust unused. I will be teaching a new class with Ann Arbor Rec & Ed this summer called "Get the Garage in Order".
